Comments: Nude name in Lightfoot (1786); as the name first appeared in print there, it cannot be adopted out of synonymy in Dillwyn (1817: 583), as Turner attempted to do (ICZN Article 11.6). If Buccinum maculosum were attributable to Dillwym 1817, it would be preoccupied by Gmelin, 1791, as pointed out by Altena (1975) in adopting Tonna pennata as a replacement, and by Buccinum maculosum Martyn, 1784, which was conserved by ICZN Opinion 479 (1959). (Rosenberg, herein, 29 June 2009).
Combining Genera:  Buccinum Cadus

Dolium perdix occidentalis Mörch, 1877b, p. 42, [Lister 984, fig. 43; Bonanni 3, fig. 191; Martini 1777, fig. 1079, etc.]

Range: 11.5°N ; 63°W
Depth: 11 m
Distribution: Venezuela: Los Testigos
References: Turner (1948) s
Comments: Turner (1948) considered that Mörch (1877: 42) used occidentalis as a geographic descriptor for Dolium perdix, not as a new name, a position followed in some prior versions of Malacolog. However, the name is not unambiguously infrasubspecific and is subspecific under ICZN Article 45.6. She attributed the name to Martens (1879, Zoological Record 14:35), but Martens merely listed the name and did not use it as valid. Dautzenberg (1900) used the name as valid.
