Robertson (2003) considered Clench & Abbott's (1943b) designation of a 'type figure' to have no standing under ICZN rules, but this is not the case. ICZN Article 74.4 states that designation of an illustration is to be treated as designation of the specimen illustrated and although Clench & Abbott did not use the term lectotype, they unambiguously selected a particular syntype as the name-bearing type (Article 74.5).
