Cerithium aguayoi Clench in Johnson, 1934 is an unnecessary new name for Cerithium varicosum Sowerby, 1834, non Defrance, 1817 nec Valenciennes, 1832; the name had previously been replaced by Cerithium fortiusculum Bayle, 1880. Clench thought that Sowerby's taxon was Western Atlantic, but it is now thought to be Eastern Pacific and is known as Cerithidea valida (C. B. Adams, 1852) (see Keen 1971).
