Oliva sayanaRavenel, 1834, p. 19, [Say 1830, pl. 3] [Basis of the current name] Type Locality: South Carolina Range: 35°N to 18.7°N; 96.98°W to 76°W Depth: 0 to 130 m (live 0 to 18 m) Maximum Reported Size: 91 mm Distribution: USA: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida: East Florida, West Florida; USA: Louisiana, Texas; Mexico: Campeche State, Yucatan State, Quintana Roo References: Springer & Bullis (1956) W; Porter (1974) DLN; García-Cubas (1982) S; Lyons (1989b) l; Hutsell, Hutsell & Pisor (2001) M Comments: New name for Oliva literata of Say. Ravenel (1834) did not refer explicit to Say's American Conchology, but must have meant that work, in which Say provided an excellent illustration of the species only four years earlier. Say (1830) referred to Lamarck's Oliva litterata but Ravenel thought that was a distinct species from Ceylon. Ravenel's description of the species is extremely brief, "sometimes exceeds 3 inches in length", but is sufficient to distinguish the species from all other Recent Oliva in the Western Atlantic.
Records from Venezuela by Macsotay & Campos (2001) are erroneous; their illustrated specimen is not O. sayana.
