Oliva olivaceusMarrat, 1870, p. [Marrat 1871: 7-8], pl. 331, fig. 46-47, 51-53 [Synonymy uncertain] Attributed to: Meuschen, 1787 (non-binominal) Type Locality: Not stated (figs. 46-47); Aspinwall, Bermuda (figs. 51-53) Range: 32.3°N ; 64.8°W Maximum Reported Size: 42 mm Distribution: Bermuda Comments: Marrat (1870, pl. 4; 1871: 45) treated O. reticularis Lamarck, 1811 as a synonym of O. olivacea Meuschen, but Meuschen's work was non-binominal, so the name must be attributed to Marrat (1870). Marrat spelled the name olivaceus on the plate (1870), and olivacea in the text (1871). Oliva olivacea has been treated as a synonym of O. reticularis by Zeigler & Porreca (1969), of O. fulgurator by Tursch & Greifeneder (2001) and of O. tisiphona by Hunon, Hoarau & Robin (2009), and as a valid species from Bermuda by Petuch & Sargent (1986). The only locality given by Marrat was "Aspinwall, Bermuda" (his figures 51-53), but he also illustrated a specimen from unstated locality (figs. 46-47). A lectotype designation is needed to establish the identity of the species; because Marrat included Lamarck's O. reticularis in O. olivacea, lectotype designation could make the names objective synonyms (Rosenberg, herein, 20 April 2009).
Oliva olorinella Duclos, 1835, [Synonym] Range: 25°N to 18°N; 81°W to 67°W Maximum Reported Size: 36.6 mm Distribution: USA: Florida: Florida Keys; Bahamas: Bimini; Puerto Rico References: Sterba (2003); Hunon, Hoarau & Robin (2009) M Comments: According to Tursch & Greifeneder (2001), the type lot contains specimens of two species, so a lectotype designation is needed to establish the identity of the species. It is treated here as a synonym of the Western Atlantic O. reticularis but it could prove to be O. oliva.
