Oliva formosaMarrat, 1870, p. [Marrat 1871: 5], pl. 330, figs. 29-30 [Basis of the current name] Type Locality: Unknown Range: 22.15°N to 10.5°N; 91.4°W to 72.2°W Depth: 50 to 63 m Maximum Reported Size: 56 mm Distribution: Mexico: Campeche Bank; Colombia References: Petuch & Sargent (1986) dSEM; E. F. García (2006, pers. comm.) DNW; García (2007b) Comments: The status of Oliva formosa is controversial. Petuch & Sargent (1986) classified it as a form of O. bewleyi, Sterba (2004) as a synonym of O. bifasciata, and Hunon, Hoarau & Robin (2009) as a synonym of O. reticularis. Based on the illustration of the holotype in Tursch & Greifeneder (2001), I concur with Sterba that it is a synonym of O. bifasciata, however, it is an older name for that species, and so is used here as valid (Rosenberg, herein, 17 April 2009).
