Abbott (1963) stated that R. johnii comes from India, but Chemnitz (1795: 284) said that John of Tranquebar, from who he received the specimen he illustrated, had not told him if it came from Coromandel, Ceylon, the Nicobar Islands or other East Indian locations, nor whether it was land, freshwater or marine.
