Comments: Clench & Turner (1957) intentionally named the taxon as new, saying that Mörch (1877:2 9) used occidentale as a geographic descriptor. Mörch applied it to four Triton, a Distorsio, and a Dolium species, so his use might be infrasubspecific. However, this is not unambiguous, so under ICZN Article 45.6, the name can be considered subspecific. Even if the intent was infrasubspecific, the adoption of this name before 1985 allows it to be deemed subspecific (Article 45.6.4.1) and it thus dates from Mörch (1877) in either case. McGinty & McGinty (1957) and Kilias (1973) also used the name as valid.
