Comments: Originally spelled as demarestia, without statement of derivation of the name. Spelled desmarestia by Lesueur (1817c: 160) a few months later, with French vernacular name 'La Firoloïde de Desmarest'. The commonest subsequent spellings are desmaresti, desmarestii, and desmarestia. None of these is in prevailing usage, but all insert an s as the species was named for [A. G.] Desmarest. Insertion of s is therefore accepted here as prevailing usage under ICZN Article 33.3.1.

Comments: E. A. Smith (1888a: 17) listed Pterotrachea hyalina under the heading "Species beyond recognition, stating, "This species I am inclined to think must be a small Firoloida. Smith recognized seven species of Firoloida but van der Spoel (1976) synonymized all of them, considering Firoloida to be monotypic. Firoloida hyalina might therefore be an older name for Firoloida desmarestia.
